No Nonsense – Sermon on Luke 24:1-11 for the Vigil of Easter

Luke 24:1-11

1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

With all the reverence and respect that I can give to them, the angels that appear the morning of the resurrection are a bit sassy. These women had left early, even before the sun had started to peek over the horizon. So, they probably hadn’t gotten themselves ready like they would on any other morning. They just tossed on some clothes and grabbed the bundles of spices as they went out the door to walk through that dewy, morning air. They went intending to finish the job of burying Jesus. But when they arrived at the tomb, they find it. The stone – rolled away. The body of Jesus – gone. So, they stand there totally disheveled and utterly perplexed.

These two angels that stand in front of them look completely different. The angels are clothed in dazzling apparel. They look at these tired women with their bundles, and it’s almost like the angels are thinking, “Oh, for cute. These women with their bundles of spices. What do they think they are going to do here?”

And one of those angels asks his sassy question, “Why do you seek the Living One among the dead? He’s not here. He is risen. Remember what He told you while He was still with you in Galilee? The Son of Man had to be delivered into the hands of sinful men, crucified, and on the third day rise. By the way, ladies, that’s today.” It’s like that angel is saying, “This shouldn’t be too difficult for you. He told you all about this.”

And it’s at that point that these women – Mary and Mary and Mary and Mary (there were lots of Marys) and Joanna and Salome – they remember that Jesus had said that He would rise. Only then did they remember those words of Jesus.

So, they ran back to tell these things to the eleven apostles and all the others who were gathered together. Luke doesn’t record the conversation between the women and the rest, but he makes it very clear (it doesn’t come out in our translation) that there was an ongoing conversation. “As they were speaking about these things to the apostles” (Lk. 24:10). 

Luke only leaves us to imagine what this conversation would have sounded like. But the women probably told them all about the angels and their dazzling apparel and about the other sassy angel who had come down to sit on the stone and dance on the grave of death (Mt. 28:2-3). They would have told them how the angel reminded them what Jesus had said about that dying and rising stuff.

But the words of these disheveled, frantic, crazy women sounded delirious. The apostles figured it was nothing more than an idle tale and a bunch of nonsense. What they had seen on Good Friday was too devastating. They figured the women hadn’t gotten enough sleep and should have set their alarm clocks for a little later.

And that reaction to the women’s report is a huge comfort to us today. They should have believed the whole time, even as Christ hung on the cross. But the fact they initially thought it was all nonsense bolsters our faith.

Because as that day rolled on, Jesus would appear to two of them on the road to Emmaus (Lk. 24:13-32). Jesus would appear to Peter (Lk. 24:34). That evening, Jesus would appear to all of them as they sat locked in the upper room (Jn. 20:19-22). Jesus would eat in front of them and show them His pierced hands and side (Lk. 24:38-43).

The women weren’t spewing a bunch of nonsense. It wasn’t an idle tale. As that day wore on, their disbelief melted away into belief. And that belief would strengthen into boldness. And that boldness would mature into courage.

What first had sounded like an idle tale and a bunch of nonsense to the apostles slowly became an undeniable certainty. Jesus died but lives. And now, because He lives, death would have no hold on them because it had no hold on Jesus. Death was no longer their enemy, because their Savior, their Lord, their Jesus, had defeated death.

As the years passed, almost all of those – who, initially, thought that the Resurrection was just a bunch of nonsense, just an idle tale of tired and confused women – they would, one by one, refuse to deny the fact that Jesus had risen. They would not deny that the One who had died is now living. They would rather give up their own lives because it wasn’t nonsense. Jesus is the Living One who gives everlasting life to all who believe in Him.

Dear saints, the day is coming when all the perplexities of this world and of your life will not be perplexing anymore. In that day, this fact will remain certain, firm, and sure – Jesus is risen. It is no nonsense. Amen.

Pleased – Sermon on Luke 2:1-20 for Christmas Eve 2024

Luke 2:1–20

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 

8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 

14 “Glory to God in the highest, 
and on earth peace among men, with whom he is pleased!” 

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Grace, mercy, and peace is yours this night from God our Father and from our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The one thing you should learn from Christmas is that God’s greatest, most earnest desire and purpose is to be with you. That’s the “true meaning of Christmas.” Hollywood will give all sorts of other answers about what the “true meaning of Christmas” is – hope, joy, giving, family togetherness, whatever. To one degree or another, those are only related to God’s desire to be with you. Each of those things is only on the fringe of the purpose of Christmas. The birth of Jesus proves that God doesn’t want to be far away or disconnected from you. He wants to be with you. Each day. Every day. God wants to be with you, as close as possible – even within your own heart (2 Co. 1:22).

I say that because of how Luke records the event. The actual birth of Jesus only takes up a tiny fraction of the reading from Luke 2:1-20. In the first five verses, Luke tells us about the census that Caesar Augustus decreed. All the details in those verses – about Augusts, the fact that it was the first registration while Quirinius was governor in Syria, the fact that Joseph was from Nazareth but had to go to Bethlehem, etc. – all of that seems to be there because Luke wants you to know that what he records has been carefully researched. He’s paid attention to the details. He wants you to know that he got all of this exactly right.

Then, Luke simply records Christ’s birth. It is while Joseph and Mary are in Bethlehem that the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth, wrapped the Infant Jesus in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in the only place available – a manger – because there was no other place for them to be, except in that stable.

It’s remarkable, the way God inspired Luke to write this. The most important thing that has ever happened or will ever happen in all of history – the birth of Jesus – is simply stated. “She gave birth.” That’s it. The thing that gets the most focus, and what we will focus on tonight, is the announcement Jesus’ birth, which starts at v. 8.

Some shepherds are nearby watching over their flocks that night. It was an otherwise normal night for these shepherds. We don’t know how many shepherds there are, but we do know the number of angels that appear to them. At first, it’s one. One angel appears, but that angel isn’t the only thing that appears. The “glory of the Lord” also shines around the shepherds. And because of this, the shepherds are afraid. They are filled with a great (the word in Greek is μέγας), a mega fear. Why?

The source of their fear wasn’t that single angel. No, they are afraid because the glory of the Lord was shining around them. That’s the closest reference to their fear. Why would they be so afraid of God’s glory shining around them? Well, they’re afraid because even though God’s glory is a beautiful and wonderful thing, but it is only wonderful if sin isn’t part of the equation. When there is sin, we can’t stand in God’s presence. In Scripture, sinners are always terrified when they find themselves in God’s presence (Ex. 20:18; Jdg. 13:22; Is. 6:5).

Now, I’ll admit that the text doesn’t mention sin. God didn’t inspire Luke to tell us that the shepherds were filled with mega fear because they remembered that they were sinners. Sure enough. But Luke didn’t need to tell us they were afraid on account of their sin because he records what the angel tells them.

“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great (there’s that word μέγας again). Good news of mega joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2:10). 

This angel gives two reasons for the shepherds to not be afraid – the two “for” statements. The first because the angel gives to not be afraid is, “Because I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.” The source of this great joy is now (present tense) for these shepherds, but it’s not for the shepherds alone.

The angel makes it clear that this great joy that will be (future tense) for all people. That includes you! The good news was given to those five or ten or however many shepherds then, but the good news of mega joy continues to be given throughout the millennia. What the angel said then still echoes to all mankind, even right now, even as you are hearing it.

The second reason the angel tells them to not be afraid is, “Unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Remember that the shepherds fear because God’s glorious presence makes them keenly aware of their sin, but the angel is quick to announce to them that there is a Savior from sin. So, let’s shorten the entire message from the angel. “Don’t be afraid; you have a Savior. He’s just been born.”

That proclamation is the solution to the shepherds’ fear. For the shepherds, the message was that very night that their Savior is born. For you here tonight, you also have nothing to fear because your Savior was born, about 2,021 years ago.

Every one of you here has a Savior. Maybe, you have believed that as long as you can remember. God be praised! Maybe, you used to believe that, but don’t believe it anymore. Maybe, you’ve never believed it. Your belief or unbelief doesn’t change the fact that your Savior is born, and I’m here tonight to tell you to believe it. Believe it because that’s how it benefits you.

Next, this one angel gives the shepherds a sign as proof that their Savior is born. They’ll find a Baby swaddled up and lying in a manger. And at the end of the text (Lk. 2:16-17), the shepherds find exactly that. There, swaddled up in a feeding trough, was the Savior of the whole world. What the angel announced to those shepherds and what that angel is announcing to you now is true. The sign proves it.

We need to go back, though, to what happens just after the shepherds hear this good news of mega joy. Right after the angel’s announcement, there appears with that one angel a huge army of the heavenly host.

The text doesn’t say that they this angel army came, arranged themselves into a choir, and began to sing. Instead, this army of angels appeared to the shepherds. From this, we are to understand that that massive troop of angels was there in that field the whole time. They just weren’t visible to the shepherds for a period, but now they are. This angelic host was present because they wanted to be there and listen to that one angel announce to the shepherds this good news of mega joy.

Angels aren’t like God. God is everywhere all the time. But angels aren’t; they aren’t omnipresent. But it is true that there are angels all around us even though we can’t see them. The Bible has all sorts of examples of angels being around people, but those people can’t see them (Num. 22:31; 1 Kg. 6:17). The night of Jesus’ birth, that angelic army choir wanted to watch as all humanity receives her King.

That angel army sings, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men, with whom He is pleased!”

This song reveals that God is pleased with all mankind. The Greek word there for ‘pleased’ is εὐδοκία. It’s two words combined together. The first part is εὐ, which means ‘good,’ and δοκία, which means ‘thinking.’ In other words, the birth of Jesus proves that God is thinking good toward all humanity – every man, every woman, every boy, every girl. You. Everyone. God is pleased with you, and you can know this because He has sent a Savior to become one of you. That is your peace. Your peace is that you have the goodwill, the good-thinking of God in heaven.

Now, I don’t know all of you here tonight. I don’t know if all of you believe this or not. But I’m here tonight to tell you from God’s Word, from the mouth of God Himself, this message: The eternal, almighty, holy, all-powerful, all-knowing God has come to dwell among you in your flesh and blood to save you from your sin. You can believe it without a doubt.

God thinks good things about you. Even though you have sinned against Him and others whom He loves, God isn’t disappointed with you. God should be. Without a doubt He should be, but He isn’t. He isn’t shaking His head and regretting that He created you. No! He is pleased with you. He loves you. That’s why He comes to save you.

Jesus, God in the flesh, your Savior, has come to you, and that is why the angel choir sings.

Again, each one of you here tonight, if you know anything, know this: God doesn’t want to be far away or disconnected from you. He wants to be with you. Each day. Every day.

Your Savior is born. He is born to shed His blood, to redeem, to ransom, and to rescue you from your sin. God is pleased to save you, to remove your sin and my sin. He has come to remove your guilt and my guilt. That is why and how you can know that God is pleased with you. Amen.

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

The Angel of Yahweh – Sermon on Exodus 3:1-15; Hebrews 1:1-14; and Psalm 34 for Midweek Advent 1

Exodus 3:1-15; Hebrews 1:1-14; Psalm 34

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Both of those Scripture readings you heard tonight (Ex. 3:1-15; Heb. 1:1-14) are so rich and so dense that we could have months of sermons on either and still not exhaust them. The same is true for tonight’s Psalm (Ps. 34) too. But, since it’s the season of Advent, we’re going to consider all three of them under one umbrella, so to speak, and that is the theme of how God comes to us in veiled power and enticing grace. We’ll begin with that reading from Ex. 3 with a little context, go to Heb. 1, and circle all the way back to Ps. 34.

To quickly summarize Ex. 1-2, you’ll remember, Moses was an Israelite slave who was born in Egypt but ended up being raised in Pharaoh’s palace. When he was forty years old (Act. 7:23f), he left the palace and saw a fellow Israelite being beaten by an Egyptian. Thinking no one was watching, Moses killed that Egyptian (Ex. 2:11-12) to save his kindred. But his homicide had a witness, and when Pharaoh found out about it, he planned to kill Moses (Ex. 2:15).

So, Moses fled Egypt, married a Midianite woman, and became a shepherd. Exodus 2 then closes like a cliffhanger. The Pharaoh who wanted to kill Moses died, and the people of Israel were left groaning in Egypt because of their slavery and cried to God for help. Then, and listen carefully to how Scripture narrows the gap between the Israelites and God: “Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew” (Ex. 2:23-25). It’s like those words want you to imagine God sitting up somewhere in heaven and hearing those cries for help. The pleas for mercy got God’s head swiveling around to find exactly where those cries are coming from. Then, He sees and knows something needs to be done.

Now, of course, God saw the suffering of His people. He sees all things and knows all things. He is omnipresent and omnipotent. But I think the text is written this way to encourage us to pray in our times of trouble to get God’s attention so He will act. And He does. God hears, He sees, and He acts.

When Moses was eighty years old, God comes down and has this conversation with Moses at the burning bush (Act. 7:30). Initially, the text identifies the Being in the bush as “the angel of the Lord.” When you see ‘Lord’ (or ‘Lord God’) with all capital letters, the translation is indicating that God’s personal, divine name, “Yahweh,” is there in the Hebrew. And ‘Yahweh’ is that “I am who I am” name that God gives to Moses which we will consider more fully next week.

Now, about this ‘angel of Yahweh’ that appears to Moses: The word translated as ‘angel’ means ‘messenger.’ There are places in Scripture where the ‘angel/messenger of Yahweh’ is a created being. The prophet Haggai is called the “angel/messenger of Yahweh” (Hag. 1:13). In Malachi 2:3, a priest is titled the “angel/messenger of Yahweh.” But here, this particular ‘angel/messenger of Yahweh’ isn’t a human or one of the myriads of angels that God created. Notice that this angel of Yahweh speaks as God Himself saying, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses appropriately responds to this angel of Yahweh, who is God Himself, by hiding his face (Ex. 3:6).

Consistently, the church has taught and held that this ‘angel of Yahweh’ who appears to Moses in the burning bush is Jesus. I won’t go into all the proof texts tonight; you can ask me for more later. For now, I’ll just give two passages to corroborate. The first one: Jn. 1:18 says, “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, He,” referring to Jesus, “He has made Him known.” And second, Jesus is the Word of God that created all things (Jn. 1:1-3) who was made flesh (Jn. 1:14), appeared, and spoke to God’s people throughout the Old Testament.

So, to summarize our reading from Ex. 3, God hears the prayers of His people from heaven as they groan under slavery on earth. He sees how they are oppressed. And He comes to them. He comes to act, but He is going to act through Moses. And notice that when the Son of God comes in power and grace, He appears to Moses in a way that entices Moses and draws him in, closer to God. The burning bush that isn’t consumed makes Moses extremely curious, so Moses gets closer to see this odd thing. God draws near to Moses in an approachable way as the ‘angel of Yahweh’ in the burning bush. Then, Jesus, the Son of God and angel of Yahweh, makes it clear that He is God who has come to deliver His people by working through Moses, sending him back to Egypt, and doing all sorts of signs through him, which brings us to Heb. 1.

Jesus, appearing to Moses as the ‘angel of Yahweh’ in the burning bush is one of the “many ways God spoke” to His people of old (Heb. 1:1). In a similar way, Jesus spoke to Joshua as the commander of Yahweh’s armies who had come to lead God’s people into the Promised Land (Jos. 5:13-15). Jesus appears to Isaiah as the holy, holy, holy Lord of hosts in Is. 6 (see Jn. 12:41). In each of those places and many more, God veils Himself just enough so the person He reveals Himself to isn’t completely destroyed. God needs to do this because no one can see the face of God and live (Ex. 33:20).

The rest of Heb. 1 tells us how Jesus is no mere angel. He is God’s only-begotten Son (Heb. 1:5). All the other angels worship Him (Heb. 1:6). He has a throne that will stand forever (Heb. 1:8-9), and all His enemies will be subjected under His feet (Heb. 1:13).

Dear saints, this is the same Jesus who has come to you. He has heard your cries for help, He has come to save you by dying and rising for you, and He is coming again so you will live forever with Him.

The epitome of God’s coming in a way that is unintimidating and accessible is the incarnation and birth of Jesus. For you, the eternal, almighty, all-powerful Son of God has come to earth. He heard your cries, saw your suffering, and delivered you. “Veiled in flesh, the God-head see. Hail th’ Incarnate Deity.” He is “pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel.” 

And this is true for you every day of your life, believer. As our Psalm (Ps. 34) said, Jesus “the angel of Yahweh encamps around [you] who fear Him, and delivers [you]” (Ps. 34:7) In Him, you find your refuge and have no lack. He delivers you from all your troubles because He redeems your life. And you find your refuge in Him. Amen.

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Rejoice – Sermon on Matthew 28:1-10 for the Resurrection of Our Lord

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

Dear saints, rejoice. Rejoice because God will not allow what is His to be stolen. You’re going to get a little Christmas on Easter because the two go together. The Son of God has taken on flesh. God has a Body. He was born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger so He could die and be laid in a tomb for you and in your place. But even though Jesus died, God did not allow death and the grave to claim, take possession of, or keep His Body (Ps. 16:10). That Body belongs to Him. He will not let it be stolen. Christ is risen. Rejoice!

The morning of the Resurrection, the Marys who had watched Jesus’ crucifixion (Mt. 27:55-56) and burial (Mt. 27:59-61) get up before dawn, and Matthew tells us that they are going to see the tomb. That statement is so ominous. The other Gospels let us know that they were returning to finish the work of embalming Jesus’ Body (Lk. 24:1; Mk. 16:1), but Matthew gives us a little insight into their mindset. They are going to the cemetery to see the tomb, the place of the dead.

But when they get there, their eyes are drawn away from the tomb to the angel sitting triumphantly on top of the stone. His appearance was like lightening, and he was wearing clothes white as snow. We don’t know his name, but this angel is quite the character. Most of the time angels pop on the scene in Scripture, they are there to declare something. Only a few times in Scripture do angels actually do things. After the Fall, a cherub guards the way to the Tree of Life with a flaming sword (Gen. 3:24). An angel takes Lot by the hand to save him from a mob (Gen. 19:9-11). And a seraph touched Isaiah’s unclean lips with a burning coal (Is. 6:6-7). But this angel outdoes all of those. This angel puts on a show.

It’s clearer in the Greek than it is in our translation, but this angel descends and causes the earthquake. He then rolls away the stone from the entrance of the tomb – not to let Jesus out. The resurrected Jesus can pop up anywhere anytime (Jn. 20:19, 26). The angel rolls away the stone to show all creation  that Jesus is risen. And then the angel sits on the stone to dance on the grave of death. This angel is playful, rambunctious, and full of rejoicing.

After all of that, the angel settles down a bit and does things we are more used to angels doing throughout Scripture. He starts talking, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus the Crucified One (which is a more literal translation). He is not here, for He has risen.” In other words, the Living One is not found in the place of the dead (Lk. 24:5). The angel then invites the women to see something better than what they had come to see. They had come to see a tomb, but it’s no longer a tomb. The angel directs their attention to the empty, vacated place where Jesus lay while He was dead (Mt. 28:6). What was supposed to be the tomb of Jesus ended up being nothing more than a temporary bed. Death had not won. Death was defeated because, again, God will not be stolen from.

Then, this dazzling, electric angel has some instructions for these women. They are given a task, a job. They are to report, but notice, please, to whom they are to give this report. “Go quickly and tell His disciplesthat He has risen from the dead, and behold, He is going before you [disciples] to Galilee; there you [disciples] will see Him” (Mt. 28:7). So, the women quickly leave the tomb to tell the disciples as they were instructed. But their announcement gets delayed because the Crucified, Risen, and Living Jesus meets them.

Christ greets them with one word, “Rejoice.” Even though that one word was a common way to greet people, the word means ‘rejoice.’ Hawaiians greet people with, “Aloha,” which means, “Love,” Jewish people will greet others with, “Shalom,” which means “Peace,” and the common greeting in Jesus’ day was “Rejoice.” (Editorial comment here: Our common greetings stink. HiHey, and ’Sup? are lame.) Anyway, even though this was the common greeting, it’s hard to imagine that Jesus, on the morning of His resurrection, was simply saying to the women, “Hey; how’s it going?” No. Our Lord joyfully greets them and invites them to rejoice.

Then, Jesus gives these women the exact same task that the angel had given them, but with an important difference. Jesus tells the women, “Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Unlike the angel, Jesus doesn’t call the eleven, “My disciples.” Jesus calls them “My brothers.” And there was no confusion for the women here. It wasn’t that they were to go tell the disciples about the resurrection and then go to find another, second group of people who are Jesus’ brothers. No. The disciples are Jesus’ brothers. And this one little change from the lips of Jesus is astounding and should fill our hearts with joy.

When someone upsets or disappoints you, you might try to create distance between that person and yourself by changing how you address them. Imagine that your best, closest friend did something truly horrible, evil, and disgusting, and this thing is known. It’s on the news, in the papers, plastered on social media, everyone knows about it. Someone might come to you and say, “Aren’t you friends with Vinny?” (I’m trying to use a name that isn’t represented here.) “Wasn’t Vinny in your wedding? Don’t you hang out with him a lot?” You don’t want your reputation to be harmed because of Vinny’s bad reputation, so you distance yourself from Vinny by changing how you refer to him. “Ugh, yeah. That guy did an awful thing.”

But look at what Jesus does here. Jesus brings the disciples closer to Himself by calling them, “My brothers.” This is remarkable. The disciples had all failed at being disciples. Just a few hours before Jesus was arrested, He clearly told the disciples, “You will all fall away because of Me this night” (Mt. 26:31). When the crowd came with clubs and swords to arrest Jesus, the disciples fled with their tails between their legs (Mt. 26:55-56). All of them were an embarrassment but think especially of Peter. Three times, Peter denied even knowing Jesus when a couple young servant girls and a stranger asked him if he knew Jesus. Peter even calls down a curse on himself, “God condemn me if I know this Jesus.” And he used more foul, colorful language than that (Mt. 26:69-74). All of the disciples had failed Jesus and fallen away, but the resurrected Jesus still calls them, “My brothers.”

When Jesus calls these eleven failures, “My brothers,” before He sees them, it shows that He has done more than reconciled them. Jesus wants to make sure that the eleven know that they are more to Jesus now, after He is raised, than they were before He died because those eleven are now forgiven, righteous, and given a better status than being followers and disciples. They now have the glory of being children of God. They are His brothers. And the same is true for you. You, like the disciples, are part of the purchased, redeemed, and adopted family of God because Jesus has died and risen to make you His own.

Dear saints, rejoice. Jesus has cleansed you of all your sins. He has made you His holy, redeemed brothers and sisters. He is not ashamed to claim you as part of His family – not at all.

I put two verses on the back of your bulletin that are worth pondering every day of your life. Hebrews 2:10-11. “For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers.”

Because He is holy, Jesus is the one who sanctifies you, who makes you holy. He is not ashamed of you. He isn’t embarrassed about your past sins – either known or hidden. Those sins have been dealt with. They have been paid for by the precious blood of Jesus. Christ has sanctified you, made you holy by His death and resurrection. He is your God, and from Him you can expect every good thing. While you were a sinner, Christ died for you. Now that He has made you Hid child, He won’t hold back any good thing from you (Ro. 8:32).

Rejoice! The Crucified and Living One is your Brother and He is not ashamed to have you as part of His family. Not now, not ever.

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

Come & Behold – Sermon on Luke 2:1-20 for Christmas Eve 2022

Luke 2:1–20

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 

8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 

14 “Glory to God in the highest, 
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The birth of Jesus – the very thing we are here to celebrate tonight – doesn’t get much ink in the Scriptures. Don’t get me wrong. The entirety of the Bible is about Jesus coming to save humanity from sin. But His birth comes and goes rather quickly, quietly, and uneventfully.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus’ birth only takes half a verse (Mt. 1:25). John’s Gospel, which we will consider in tomorrow’s sermon, simply says that Jesus, the Word, became flesh and dwelt among us (Jn. 1:14). We could say that John doesn’t record anything about Jesus’ birth because Jesus became flesh the moment He was miraculously conceived. Mark doesn’t include anything about Jesus’ birth; he jumps straight into Jesus’ ministry (Mk. 1:1-11). And even in this familiar reading from Luke 2, Jesus’ birth fills only one verse, v. 7.

The first six verses of this text show how God was working behind the scenes and using Caesar’s census and taxation to get Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem where God promised the Savior would be born (Mic. 5:2-5a). There, we see that God uses even the most powerful people the world to bring about His purpose and plan – even when they don’t intend to. Then, v. 8-20 are about the announcement of Jesus’ birth, which is what we are going to meditate on.

As shepherds are tending their sheep out in the field, an angel of the Lord appears to them and God’s glory shines all around them. The shepherds are terrified, but the agnel says to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy…. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Notice that the angel is speaking directly to the shepherds. The angel tells them, “Fear not.” This has to be to the shepherds because the other people in and around Bethlehem aren’t terrified; only the shepherds are. Also, notice how the angel directs his speech to them, “I bring you good news… unto you is born this day a Savior.” The angel isn’t speaking over the shepherds’ heads to the entire world. Finally, the angel gives the shepherds instructions how to find this newborn Savior. “You’ll find Him wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” This news and announcement is specifically directed to the shepherds that first Christmas night.

Now, it isn’t the first Christmas anymore, and you have probably noticed that I’ve been skipping over a phrase as I’ve been talking about v. 10-11. I’m not ignoring it. I’ve delayed including it to make a point, and it is time to make that point.

The message of the angel that first Christmas night is good news for those shepherds. A Savior has been born to them. Eventually, that good news will spread over the days, years, and centuries. The first Christmas it was for the shepherds, but this good news of great joy will be for all people, but please know that it is for you specifically and directly, in the same way it was for the shepherds that night.

If that angel was here tonight, he would say directly to you, “I bring you good news of great joy… unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord.” Don’t get lost in the broad scope this announcement. It isn’t as though this Savior is born for all people, and since you’re part of ‘all people,’ I guess, you’re included. No! Unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Maybe some Christmas Eve, I’ll preach to each of you individually. But the sermon would be the same for everyone. “Unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”

You infants, I’m preaching to you right now. Some might think it’s silly because you can’t understand or comprehend, but this is God’s Word. And the Holy Spirit accompanies that Word to create and sustain the faith God gave you in your Baptism. So, you infants, unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Your Savior was once just like you – small and helpless. His father and mother had to carry Him around and do everything for Him. Jesus came to save you. Jesus says that you are the model of our faith and to you belongs the kingdom of God (Lk. 18:18-19).

You children, you’re part of this too. Jesus is your Savior. You aren’t perfect. You sin. But unto you children is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Jesus loves you and desires that you come to Him (Mk. 10:13-16). And know this, you are the reason that Jesus grew up as a child.

You adults who have busy, full lives. You have a lot of pressures. Working. Putting food on the table and keeping the house warm. Running kids from one thing to another and helping them with homework. In between all of that, you try to find time to clear your sidewalks and driveway from the ridiculous amount of snow we’ve gotten. You do your best, but you lose your patience. You say and do things to your kids, spouse, friends, and coworkers that you regret. You might have all sorts of things on your mind right now about the rest of the evening’s activities and the credit card bill that is coming to pay for tonight. Well, you adults, give me at least five seconds of your attention: Unto you adults is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

You seniors, you’ve seen a lot of changes throughout your life, and very few of those changes have been for the better. Even though Christmas isn’t the same as it was in your childhood, Jesus hasn’t changed. Your Savior is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). Unto you is born a Savior who is Christ the Lord. Jesus loves you no less today than the day you were Baptized and brought to faith, and your God will remain faithful to you all your days.

And you who mourn the recent death of a loved one, I know Christmas can be especially difficult. Tonight, you might find yourself looking to an empty chair or wanting to make a comment to someone who is no longer with you. And that absence tonight is just another reminder of the pain and loneliness you feel daily. In the midst of that pain, don’t be ashamed of feeling the joy of the birth of Jesus. You can feel sad tonight, and it’s understandable if you do. Even Jesus wept at the death of His friend, Lazarus (Jn. 11:35). Just know that joy and sadness can mingle together because this good news of great joy is also for you. Unto you is born this day a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this same Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn. 11:25).

Again, the angel would say to each of you, “Unto you is born this day a Savior who is Christ the Lord.” The only difference between you and those shepherds is that you cannot go to see Jesus in the manger. He didn’t stay there. Yes, His infant arms were tucked tightly into that manger so those same arms could be stretched out upon the cross. His head was surrounded by hay in a feeding trough to later be crowned with thorns. His body was swaddled and laid in a manger so that same body could eventually be wrapped in linen cloths and laid in a tomb. But just as He did not remain the manger, neither did He remain in the grave.

Even if you went to Bethlehem right now, you wouldn’t behold Jesus there. Instead, you have something better. You have His presence here and now. The Savior born unto you this day says, “Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them” (Mt. 18:20). 

You who have gathered here in Jesus’ name, come and behold Him. You never have to wonder if God loves you. He has demonstrated His great love for you (Ro. 5:8). If you want to know what God thinks of you, first, look down into the manger, then look up to the cross. There is your answer. Merry Christmas! Amen.

Name-Calling Savior – Sermon on John 20:1-18 for the Resurrection of Our Lord

John 20:1-18

1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Just as a ‘heads-up,’ I’m going to set the scene and fill out some details about Mary Magdalene as well as the events of morning of Jesus’ resurrection. I’m not making stuff up; I’ll be pulling from Scripture. If you want the references for things that I mention that aren’t in this text, ask me after the service, and I can print out the sermon with all the references.

Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb before light dawns the morning of the Resurrection, but she isn’t seeing, hearing, or thinking clearly. She is still filled with grief and sorrow from watching Jesus’ crucifixion. Mary Magdalene stood and witnessed the sad events of Good Friday at the foot of the cross (Jn. 19:25; Mk. 15:40). And the last time she had seen her Lord, He was wrapped in burial cloths before the sun set on Friday (Mt. 27:61; Mk. 15:47; Lk. 23:55-56).

But now, it’s Sunday, the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene was one of several women who went to the tomb (Mt. 28:1; Mk. 16:1; Lk. 24:10). As the women approached, they began to ask each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they got there, they saw that the stone had already been rolled away by an angel who was sitting on it (Mk. 16:1-4; Mt. 28:2). It seems as though Mary Magdalene immediately ran back to the disciples as soon as she saw the open tomb.

For Mary Magdalene, the empty tomb was, initially, another reason to grieve because she thinks that someone has stolen Jesus (Jn. 20:13, 15). She runs back to tell Peter and John about it. She returns to the tomb with them while they investigate her claim (Jn. 20:3-9). They see the empty tomb and the neatly-folded burial cloths (Jn. 20:5-7). But these two disciples can’t comfort Mary because they didn’t believe that Jesus had risen; at least not at this point. In fact, the disciples won’t believe the resurrection until later that evening (Jn. 20:8b-9; Lk. 24:36-49).

Peter and John leave the tomb, but Mary stays there. And sorrow again fills her. She sees two more angles dressed in white robes sitting inside the tomb where Jesus had been laid, and she even has a conversation with them. They ask her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” And you can hear the pain in Mary Magdalene’s voice as she answers, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” This conversation with the angels doesn’t help Mary believe in the Resurrection.

And I wonder what the angels thought about this conversation with Mary. They might have been a bit confused by her reply because, as Mary said this, Jesus is standing behind her.

Mary turns around and sees Jesus standing. But seeing the resurrected Jesus doesn’t give her faith. She thinks He is the gardener. And Jesus, patient Jesus, asks her the same question the angels had asked, “Woman, why are you weeping?” But Jesus adds another question, “Whom are you seeking?”  It’s almost like Jesus is saying, “Hey, it’s Me, I’m right here.” But Mary still doesn’t believe Jesus is raised. She says, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Even this conversation with the resurrected Jesus doesn’t give her faith.

But then, everything changes when Jesus speaks her name, “Mary.” I wonder what intonation Jesus used. Did He say it with a mild rebuke, “Mary”? Did He say it with a snicker, “Mary”? Maybe, He said it with utter compassion, “Mary.”

No matter how Jesus said her name, she believes. That one word – and not just any word, but her very own name spoken by the lips and voice of her resurrected Savior – pulls her out of her grief and sorrow. This is so magnificent.

The same voice that called seven demons out her (Lk. 8:2; Mk. 16:9) now expels the demon of unbelief. The last time she had heard the voice of Jesus was when He cried out on the cross “It is finished,” (Jn. 19:30) and, “Father into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Lk. 23:46). Now, that same voice, filled with life and peace, speaks her name, “Mary.” Jesus – who had drunk the cup of God’s wrath, had all the sins of the world laid on Him, and had passed through death and the grave – He calls her by name. And Mary believes and latches herself on to Jesus as though she will never let go. But her grip on Jesus isn’t as important as His grip on her.

Jesus sends her with a message to give to the disciples, “Go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’” Jesus can call the disciples, “My brothers,” and say this because something new has arrived. All who believe in Christ, all His disciples, all Christians, are welcomed into a new world where they are Jesus’ siblings, where God is ‘your God’ and Jesus’ Father is now ‘your Father.’

So, that very moment in the garden next to the empty tomb, Mary experienced the fulfillment of Isaiah 43:1-3. “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

I’m going to give you some Easter homework: Before you send your kids out hunting for Easter eggs, as a family, read Isaiah 43:1-3 and v. 11-18 of this text, then read Isaiah 43:1-3 again to see the parallels.

Dear saints, what Jesus did for Mary Magdalene the morning of the Resurrection, He does for you. He calls you by name. In John 10, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (Jn. 10:11). In that passage, Jesus also says that He is the shepherd who, “calls His own sheep by name and leads them out” (Jn. 10:3). Jesus, your Shepherd, is the name-calling Savior. He calls you by name in your Baptism and places His name – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – upon you (Mt. 28:19). 

Jesus is your God, your Savior. You, Christian – this could be said to each and every one of you by name – you will always have the risen Jesus. He will never leave you or forsake you. He died for you and has forgiven all your sin. Christ leads you through every trial and tribulation you face in this life. And He leads you to the resurrection. Nothing in this world will overwhelm or consume you. You belong to Him. Jesus is your Savior, Redeemer, and Brother, and God is your God.

You are His. You belong to Him. He has bought and purchased you with His holy and precious blood by dying on the cross and rising again for you.

And now, He invites you to come to His table where you will again see Him in Bread, which is His resurrected Body, and in Wine, which is His life-giving Blood. Come, taste, and see that the Lord is good (Ps. 34:8).

The Easter Angel – Sermon on Matthew 28:1-7 for the Easter Vigil

Alleluia! Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

The angel caused the earthquake that Easter morning. Our translation says, “there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven” (Mt. 28:2), but it should probably be, “becausean angel of the Lord descended.” The earth shook because the angel caused it to. And it isn’t the quake that moves the stone. The angel rolls it away after the quake then sits on it.

This angel is quite the character. We don’t know his name, but he certainly is a rabble rouser. He has the appearance of lightening and clothing white as snow.

This flashy, showy angel doesn’t sit on the stone because he is tired. Angels don’t get fatigued like we do. He sits there to mock the stone and the tomb that it had sealed. You could almost say that he’s dancing on the grave. But with a different meaning than we usually give to that phrase. He’s dancing on the grave of death.

It would have taken several strong, well-bodied people to roll that stone away. You’ll hear in tomorrow’s Gospel reading from Mark (16:3) that the women were concerned about who was going to move it for them when their plan is to return to the tomb and finish preserving Jesus’ body. Their plans had to change. But for this angel, that stone was puny and totally insignificant. The angel just tosses it aside. It wasn’t capable of keeping Jesus in the grave, and the angel sits on it to show how inconsequential the attempts were to keep Jesus dead.

The guards are terrified by all of this and rightly so. They trembled just like the ground. Their armor, swords, and training were nothing in the presence of this angel. They became like dead men. As they lay there on the ground, they were probably glad that this electrified angel hadn’t sat on them.

But then, Matthew mentions the women. They arrive to this dominant display of angelic power, and the angel tells them, “Do not be afraid,” even though there is no mention of them being fearful. The women had been scared previously. Scared to tears after the death of Jesus. But the time for weeping is over. Psalm 126:5 says, “Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy.” For these women, and for all believers in Christ, the harvest has come.

Our time of sowing tears is finished. Jesus lives. It is time to gather in the crop of resurrection joy. Because Jesus is risen, our mouths are filled with laughter and our hearts with cheer. The angel sits on that stupid, weak, trivial stone because nothing can stop the victory parade of life.

Jesus had gone weak as a newborn lamb to the cross, but there He stripped the devil of all his strength. The trickster serpent has been tricked. On Good Friday, Satan was tempted just like Eve was in the Garden. The devil saw the forbidden fruit that hung on the tree of Calvary. He took it and ate. But now his belly bursts, and he is the one who has to hide.

He is done, finished, defeated. The devil has no accusations left. He threw all his accusations at Christ, and Jesus has answered for all of them. So now, when Satan tries to accuse you, all you have to do is point him to Christ, and his mouth is silenced. He has no allegations left for you because Jesus has died to take them all away, and Christ is risen to show they are nothing.

Did Satan think that a rock and some guards could keep Jesus dead? Maybe, but this resurrection angel, and all the angels, laugh at the thought. It would be easier to fit the oceans in a styrofoam cup or to ride a unicycle to Pluto than to keep God in the grave.

God wouldn’t let what is His be stolen. He takes it back. He takes back Adam and Eve. He delivers Noah and his family. He frees the whole people of Israel from slavery. He restores to Himself Ezekiel and that valley of dead, dry – very dry – bones. He restores the fortunes of Zion and exalts over them with loud singing. He pulls His people safely from the burning fiery furnace and walks with us in every trouble.

God does all of this because Christ has bought and paid for you on the cross. The devil has no claim – none whatsoever. Satan got what he thought he wanted. He took a bite out of God. The devil bruised His heel by putting Him to death. But Jesus has crushed his head. Jesus died, but He lives.

Every day of our lives now, let’s join this rambunctious angel in mocking sin, death, and the devil. Daily don the robes of righteousness that Christ has given you in your Baptism (Gal. 3:27). Daily let the God-given light of salvation shine through you (Mt. 5:14-16).

The grave is open. It couldn’t hold Jesus. It won’t hold your loved ones who have departed with the sign of faith. And It won’t hold you either.

We don’t know this rambunctious resurrection angel’s name. But one day, God be praised, we will. Amen.[1]
